Walk the path of great SULAYR GR-240

 
Retrieve the old name Sulayr, mountain of the sun, was known as the Sierra Nevada by Muslims, has been rescued countless ways. Through them, embedded in mid-altitude between the peaks and peoples, we will go over 300 km. about this unique mountain. Different cultures living in its foothills have used these traditional paths while they lived in the mountains, and mule trails and forest.

To make this interesting is either necessary to plan our route, choose the appropriate time of year and be suitably equipped, as the trail is generally away from population centers and at times verges on the mountain. If everything is favorable places to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada, from the Mediterranean and mountains of north Africa to several regions of eastern Andalusia.

Sulayr is a circular route around the entire Sierra Nevada mountain range to an average height of between 1,800 m. and 2,000 m. It traverses the districts of Granada and Almeria Alto Genil, Dilar Valley, Valle Lecrin, Alpujarras, Valle del Río Nacimiento, Marquesado Zenete and the Valle del Rio Alhama. Landscapes are intact and processed by the different cultures living in this territory. We are in a high mountain with a human footprint significantly in some places. The situation and its proximity to the southern seas have allowed a human presence impossible in other mountains. This has grown above 2,000 m. and grazing are still more than three thousand. This is reflected in the landscape with many traditional elements in the light along the mountain (old farmhouses, ditches, terraces, ponds, eras, sheep ...).

The diversity of landscapes is one of the characteristic features of the Sierra Nevada, this makes representation of many species that find shelter in the different habitats found in this huge arena altitudinal. Sulayr runs through many of these ecosystems to liven up the road and turn into an unforgettable experience.

The tour takes place almost entirely within the National and Natural Parks of Sierra Nevada. This is a privilege but a responsibility to respect the rules that apply to an area of maximum protection.

The trail also passes by roads full of history. Excited to walk down where it had been in chivalric snow on the peaks to the city, or where the prisoners were heading to the mines to work, just as impressive through places that have been the scene of fierce battles and ambushes. And they say travel on the same locations where travelers and botanists discovered corners extraordinary and unique flora in the world.

WHERE TO START


Since Balzain take the road up to Cumbres Verdes, where the asphalt ends and continuous forest track along 10 km. To the Botanical Garden of the Cortijuela, where it joins the route of the Trail Sulayr.

From The Cortijuela we can take in one direction or another circular route of the trail in sections corresponding to Cortijuela-La Pista San Jerónimo and La Rinconada de-Cortijuela Niguel. In both sections of this rugged territory, crossing hills and ravines, are wonderful scenery between forests of pines, oaks and holm oaks, which moves a rich and varied fauna, not always easy to see, like the mountain goat, wild boar or an eagle real.
